Can I set up the Splunk App for NetApp Data ONTAP without a forwarder?

hi, I have not been able to get the Splunk App for NetApp Data ONTAP on a heavy forwarder working. The documentation is too confusing for me to follow. Is there a way, with clear instructions, to set this up with just a Splunk server and no forwarder? thank you, jeff
