Can I update max_fd parameter in limits.conf on a list of heavy forwarders via any deployment app?

Hi All, 1) Can I update max_fd parameter in limits.conf on a list of heavy forwarders via any deployment app? [inputproc] max_fd = 1024 and will it override the default value $SPLUNK_HOME/splunk/etc/system/local/limits.conf? OR Should I update it in $SPLUNK_HOME/splunk/etc/system/local/limits.conf?? 2) Also can someone explain if there's any connection of this max_fd in limits.conf with ulimit open files setting? Should I modify this also if I change max_fd in Splunk? What's the connection? Appreciate help on this.
